Remember how your parents used to make you eat greens telling you they have a lot of beneficial ingredients. Well, they were right, and one of the green vegetables we are going to talk about today is Broccoli sprouts. It is said that Broccoli can lower the risk of diabetes and cancer because of its organosulfur compounds, such as glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which exhibit a wide range of bioactivities including antioxidant activity. Research was conducted under the direction of Professor Hideshi Ihara and Assistant Professor Shingo Kasamatsu of Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Science, to examine the quantity of polysulfides in broccoli sprouts during their germination and growth.

Benefits of Broccoli Sprouts

According to research, Broccoli is a good source of protein, vitamins, fibre, minerals and phytochemicals. Dr Kasamatsu stated, “The discovery of the significant increase in polysulfide content during the sprouting process from broccoli seeds was completely by chance and very surprising. As per another research by the International Sprout Growers Association, a 3-ounce (85-gram) serving of broccoli sprouts packs (2):

Fiber: 4 grams
Protein: 2 grams
Fat: 0.5 grams
Vitamin C: 60% of the Daily Value (DV)
Vitamin A: 10% of the DV
Calcium: 6% of the DV

In addition, just one serving of these sprouts provides high amounts of vitamin C, which is known for its antioxidant and immune-boosting properties.

Side effects of Broccoli Sprouts

Broccoli sprout is commonly consumed in foods. Properly grown broccoli sprouts don't cause any side effects. However, broccoli sprouts that have not been grown properly should be avoided. These sprouts have a higher chance of being contaminated with bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
