Floods Update: Death toll rises in Assam and Bihar ; Red Alert also issued in 6 Kerala districts with forecast for heavy rains

The North east of India and parts of Bihar is reeling under heavy rainfall and flood situation. While flood related death toll reaches 55 in Assam and Bihar, Centre on Tuesday announced 251 crore rupees for the former as all 33 districts of the state are badly affected by flood. Incessant rains that have led to rise in river level have caused flood situation in the states. Red alert has been announced in 6 districts of Kerala and there has been 14 rain related death in the state of Uttar Pradesh as well. 

Assam 

Centre has released an aide of 251 crore after flood situation turned grim in the state of Assam. Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation in Assam with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and assured all support to the state by the Centre to deal with the situation. After the meeting with Sonowal and government officials concerned, Shekhawat told reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with the chief minister on Monday to review the flood condition in the state and he was sent to take stock of the situation.

Till the morning on Wednesday, July 17, 45 lakh people have been affected. As per Assam State disaster management authority the Brahmaputra river and its tributary are above danger level. CM Sarbananda Sonowal will take round of flood affected Barak Valley on July 17.

Bihar: 

Around 25 lakh people have been displaced in 16 districts of Bihar that are affected by floods. Extreme rainfall in Nepal, and massive discharge of water from rivers have led to flood situation in the state. 

An official report by the Disaster Management Department 13 teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations in the affected districts. The authorities have also opened 152 relief camps giving shelter to 45,053 people, while 251 community kitchens have been made functional.
The chief minister held a high-level meeting to review the flood situation. Later, he conducted the aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sheohar, Sitamarhi and East Champaran districts.

Water Resources Minister Sanjay Jha, Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Water Resources department) Arun Kumar and Disaster Management Department Principal Secretary Pratyaya Amrit accompanied Kumar during the aerial survey.The Patna Meteorological Centre has forecast rain with thunderstorm at many places in Bihar in the next four days. Chief minister Nitish Kumar announced that the state government would start disbursing Rs 6,000 as gratuitous relief to each family affected by the deluge through direct benefit transfer (DBT) from Friday onwards.

Kerala:

Red alert has been announced in the 6 districts of the state of Kerala.  Fishermen have been advised not to advance to the sea. While alert in Idukki and Malappuram districts are from July 18. Wayanad and Kannur districts are on alert from July 19 while Ernakulam and Thrissur are on high alert from July 20.

Uttar Pradesh

14 people have been reportedly killed in rain related incident in the state. Yogi Adityanath directed district magistrates of the affected people to provide 4 lakh to each the affected people, as per reports. 

Meanwhile, former cricketer Virendra Sehwag has appealed people to stand in support of the flood affected states. Athlete Hima Das who belongs to Assam has also urged the same.
