Update: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for next of kin of those who have died in the fire and Rs 2 lakh for those injured.
He had earlier taken to Twitter and expressed shock over the loss of lives in the fire. He had further assured that the Delhi government will provide all help to the affected families and the cause of fire will be probed.
A massive fire broke out in a four-storey building at Zakir Nagar in Okhla area in southeast Delhi in the early hours of Tuesday. As per the officials, 10 people suffered injuries in the first and six people have been killed. Speaking in the matter, the fire officials said that they received a call about the fire at 2:32 am following which multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
The injured, which also include two firemen have been shifted to hospital for treatment, fire department officials added. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot, as per the officials.
"Five patients are in the intensive care unit (ICU), some are in the ward and one is in pediatric ICU. Everything is under control. We have specialists to look after the patients," said Dr Mala, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Holy Family Hospital.
As many as 20 people have been rescued from the spot, while around seven cars and eight motorcycles have gutted in the massive fire. Meanwhile, the fire has been doused with the efforts of the fire tenders.
