After onions, tomato price surges to Rs 80 per kg in Delhi

After Delhi citizens faced troubles over rise in onion price, the retail price of tomatoes has also increased up to Rs 80 per kilogram in the national capital

With the citizens of national capital facing difficulty with soaring prices of onions, the retail price of tomatoes has also increased to Rs 80 per kilogram in Delhi on Wednesday. The tomato prices have sky-rocketed due to supply disruption in the aftermath of incessant rains in key growing states, including Karnataka. While the onion prices have come considerably down in the past week, tomato prices have come to add to the woes of the citizens in the national capital. Price of onions has come down to around Rs 60 per kg as compared to 70-80 per kg. 

With the impact on supplies, tomatoes have turned costlier in the past few days, as per the traders in Delhi. Depending on the quality of tomatoes, the local vendors are selling the commodity at prices between Rs 60 and 80 per kg on Wednesday, as reported by news agency PTI

"Tomato prices have increased sharply in the last few days as the supply has been affected because of floods and heavy rains in the key growing states," a wholesale trader at Azadpur Mandi told PTI.

Lower supply due to crop damage

The states of Telangana and Karnataka witnessed heavy rainfall during the monsoon season which affected the crop production in the areas, leading to a supply shortage. As per the data released by the central government data, the average retail price of tomato in Delhi increased to Rs 54 per kg on Wednesday from Rs 45 per kg on October 1. The government data added that the retail prices of tomatoes were higher in other metro cities also ranging from Rs 60 per kg in Kolkata, Rs 54 per kg in Mumbai to Rs 40 per kg in Chennai on Wednesday. Recently, the Madhya Pradesh government issued orders asking the traders to keep a limited stock of onions with themselves in order to give a relief to the people due to soaring prices.

Relief in onion prices by Delhi govt

Earlier in September, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had announced that the AAP government will be selling onions at a price lower than the retail price at Rs. 24 per kg through mobile vans. The announcement had come as a relief for the citizens of Delhi who were forced to buy onion at a sky-rocketed price at Rs. 70-80 per kg.
