Mumbai Airport witnesses mock drill, T2 evacuated and put on lockdown
Mumbai Airport's Terminal 2 was put on lockdown temporarily last week, total evacuation was conducted as part of a mock drill to gauge the preparedness level

It’s been a week since the last mock drill was conducted at Mumbai Airport. Today the terminal 2 of the Mumbai airport was suddenly put on lockdown and then complete evacuation took place for a mock drill which will continue for a few hours. In keeping with ICAO guidelines, GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) conducted a surprise mock drill wherein the airport received a simulated bomb threat call at Terminal 2 at 12:57 hrs. Having been assessed as a specific threat, the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee evacuated the terminal at 13:17 hrs. After successful checks by the CISF team, the terminal was declared safe from all threats and the drill was called off at 14:01 hrs.

Several tweets from the passengers travelling to and from Mumbai came up questioning whether there is any emergency at Mumbai Airport. The tweets clearly indicated that a lockdown existed for a few minutes and then complete evacuation took place at terminal 2 of Mumbai airport.

MIAL official's statement
“This was a pre-planned mock exercise to tackle any emergency situation in the near future. According to ICAO, across the world, such exercises take place in airports to be equipped to handle any crises. This drill involves all stakeholders like National Disaster Response Force, Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, hospitals and Ambulance services," said a MIAL official. Last week, as part of the simulated exercise, a domestic passenger aircraft on the approach path of runway 09-27 crashed at the university ground — which fell on the approach path — due to an engine failure. The drill lasted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This drill was conducted by MIAL in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), GoAir and SNDT Women’s University.
