Parveen Pardeshi appointed as the new BMC chief; incumbent Ajoy Mehta promoted to Maharashtra's new Chief Secretary

Chief Miniter of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis has appointed Parveen Pardeshi as the new BMC chief. Praveen who is replacing Ajoy Mehta will take charge on Monday, May 10.

Pardeshi was the additional chief secretary to Chief Minister Fadnavis. After Ajoy Mehta was appointed as Maharashtra's new Chief Secretary, his name was among the ones to be considered for the post along with Rajeev Jalota, additional chief secretary, Revenue and RA Rajeev MMRDA commissioner.

The appointment of a Mehta as new chief secretary had come after the current chief secretary U. P. S. Madan sought voluntary retirement, the CMO official said requesting anonymity. Madan was to retire in September. Mehta will have a tenure till September this year though the state government may give him an extension.

Pardeshi is a 1985-batch IAS officer who is one of the top bureaucrats in Fadnavis' government. When Fadnavis took office, he appointed Pardeshi as the principal secretary. later, Pardeshi became the additional chief secretary. He has earlier served in various departments of the Indian Administrative services, including the Revenue Department and the Forest Department.

Mehta, 59, is a 1984 cadre Indian Administrative Service officer, and he took over as the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), a coveted position, in April 2015. As the municipal commissioner, Mehta oversaw the long-winding process to draft the Mumbai development plan 2034, the changes made to it, and its final adoption last year.
