In a major development weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party has approached founder and leader of Patidar Amanat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) Hardik Patel to join its cadre and contest the upcoming elections on Cong ticket in the Gujarat state, sources have confirmed to Republic TV.

In a closed-door meeting, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, newly appointed Uttar Pradesh East General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and Hardik Patel discussed the game plan for Gujarat elections, sources told Republic TV.

Sources have further told that the Patidar leader is going to address a crucial press briefing on March 8 from the state. Top Congress party sources on March 6 stated that Hardik Patel is likely to contest the Lok Sabha election from Jamnagar constituency in Gujarat. Currently, the Jamnagar Lok Sabha seat is represented by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Poonamben Maadam.

In 2017, while Hardik Patel did not contest the 2017 Gujarat elections, he supported the Congress in its campaign in the state along with fellow young leaders Jignesh Mevani and Alpesh Thakor. Focussing on Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress had given a tough fight to the ruling BJP in the last assembly polls in the state.

Earlier in February, Patidar leader Hardik Patel has confirmed that he will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He rose to prominence almost overnight in 2015 after starting his party to raise the demands for reservation in government jobs and education for members of the Patidar community.
