Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) spokesperson Prateek Som is optimistic about his party's bright prospects in the recently held Haryana Assembly elections. "My party has always claimed that we will hold the key to forming the government in Haryana. This time, Haryana has gone for silent voting. People were not very vocal about their choices," Som said while speaking to a news agency on Wednesday.

Haryana went to polls on Monday, the results of which will be announced on Thursday. The JJP, which came into existence after a vertical split in INLD following a feud within the Chautala clan, is contesting the polls independently and has 88 candidates in the fray.

"The surveys which have been conducted by various agencies are primarily based on the 2019 Lok Sabha election perception. They have not taken into consideration the actual report from the ground," said Som adding, "The result will be astonishing. JJP will play a significant part in the formation of the Haryana government."

JJP's uphill task

JJP is led by Dushyant Chautala, former MP and grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. It broke off from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in December 2018, caused by infighting among the Chautala family. The party has high hopes to seize Jat votes that swung away from INLD to the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. The party, however, faces a mammoth rival in the ruling BJP and can possibly be the kingmaker should any party fails to reach the majority mark to form the government.
