In a renewed caste-based controversy, BJP Delhi president, Manoj Tiwari on Friday has released a list of nominees for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections in which he has declared the sub-caste of each nominee. As per regulations on a rotational basis, this year, the mayoral seat is reserved for councillors from the Scheduled Caste (SC) Category.

Tiwari announced the list on Twitter listing the nominees.

While only the Mayor seat is reserved for SC candidates, the list also displayed the sub-caste of nominees for the deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members which belong to the general category.

His decision to bifurcate the general category into sub-castes has irked many Indians, who have questioned the necessity of displaying the caste while nominating:

(Is caste necessary in this also...Stop such caste based politics.. )

(Which caste is Punjabi?)

('Now, do not do such discrimination based on castes in Hindus. You started the 'Purvachali' caste. Do I also start writing Uttarakhnadi instead of Bramhin now? I am against discrimination in Hindus')

The actor-turned-politician from Bihar, Tiwari, is the current Lok Sabha member for the North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. He was previously a part of the then Mulayam Singh-led Samajwadi Party. Now, he is set to contest for re-election in the Delhi Lok Sabha polls which is scheduled in Phase 6 on May 12. The Lok Sabha Elections are being held from April 11 to May 19 in seven phases, with the results to be announced on May 23.
