Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has finally jumped into the controversy over US President Donald Trump's claims about being asked by PM Modi to mediate in Kashmir issue. Rahul Gandhi, after being missing for approx 48 hours from social media, took to Twitter and chose to demand PM Modi to speak in over Trump's claims, even as the MEA has issued his stern stance in the matter.

Gandhi, who chose not to attend the last rites of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit on July 21 and seemingly could not take out time to acknowledge the efforts made by ISRO scientists over the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2 on July 22, took to Twitter on Tuesday and called Foreign Ministry's denial in the matter "weak" adding that it "won't do".

In a quick response to Trump's claims, MEA on Monday night rejected third-party mediation in Kashmir issue and clarified that no such request has been made by PM Modi to the US President.

Speaking in the Parliament, EAM Jaishankar also reiterated that talks will take place between India and Pakistan on the basis of provision under the Shimla Agreement and Lahore declaration which calls for bilateral ties only.

"I would like to categorically ensure the House that no such request has been made by the Prime Minister to the US president. I reiterate no such request has been made to the US President. I would, Sir, also reiterate that it has been India's consistent position that all outstanding issue by Pakistan be discussed bilaterally. Let me conclude by emphasising that Shimla agreement and Lahore declaration provide the basis for to resolve all issue between India and Pakistan bilaterally," Jaishankar said.
