Andheri: Community fridge to provide food to the underprivileged

Residents in Andheri, Mumbai have set up a community fridge aimed to reduce wastage and to provide food for the underprivileged people. People can take food from the fridge anytime between 1 pm to 2:30 pm and in the evenings from 7 pm to 9:30 pm, seven days a week. This initiative was started by the residents of Andheri and Versova Welfare Association.

'The aim is to check food wastage'

Commenting on this initiative, a resident of the area, Preeti Khorana stated, "Such community fridges have been installed at five places, namely, Lokhandwala, Versova, Oshiwara, DN Nagar and Mira Road." The caretaker of the community fridge, Naveen Kumar Mandal said, "The aim is to check food wastage and use the extra food to feed the needy. This will help those who live on the roads and those who are jobless or poor." Afzal Ansari, who uses the community fridge said, "We come here at 12 o'clock for food. We get it from 1 pm to 2 pm. We are happy to get food as we are jobless." The food is provided by nearby eateries, residents of the area and members of the Versova Welfare Society.

'Happy Fridge' installed in Bhubaneshwar

In its bid to ensure that no person goes to sleep on an empty stomach, a non-profit organisation with active participation by citizens has installed two refrigerators in the city to provide food to those in need. The 'Happy Fridge' by (NGO) Feeding India has been set up in two locations in Bhubaneshwar. The fridges installed at the prominent locations are coming in handy in providing meals to the beggars and poor people who live on the streets among others.

'Janta' fridge installed in Dehradun

In a bid to avoid food wastage and provide assistance to those in need, a public refrigerator known as 'Akshaya Patra' has been installed by the Vikalp Samiti in Dehradun's city market. "We have named this 'Janta' fridge as 'Akshaya Patra'. It means a vessel which does not get empty. We want this fridge to never get empty," Pradeep Kunjawal told ANI. "The fridge has been installed with a give and take concept. People can take food from here and when they have some extra they can keep it here for others. Often people want to donate stuff but they do not know where to go. Moreover, they are not sure if it will reach the right people. Therefore, this fridge will help people in helping others," said a member of the Vikalp Samiti.
