Andhra Pradesh: CM Jagan proposes green tax, ban on single-use plastic

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy proposed imposition of green tax and ban on single-use plastic with the aim to control pollution in the state

In an attempt to check the level of increasing pollution in the state, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has proposed the imposition of green tax and ban on single-use plastic. The crucial decision was taken by Jagan Mohan Reddy after a review meeting with the forest and environment department on Thursday. The state is all set to collect green tax in order to crack a whip on pollution by industrial houses. Directing the officials to prepare the proposal for imposing ban on single-use plastic in the state, Jagan further asked the officials to promote the protection of environment and prevention of pollution.

Reviewing the increase in the level of pollution in Andhra Pradesh, Jagan Reddy said that one lakh tonnes of waste is being generated by pharma companies but only 30 percent of it is being recycled. He added that the remaining 70 percent is dumped in the open which pollutes the environment. Jagan Mohan Reddy also asked the officials to identify various methods and steps taken by other countries to control pollution and preserve the environment.

“How will our future generations survive if we do not protect our environment and nature? Our state should be inspiring to the nation,” he said as quoted by a press statement. 

Furthermore, efforts are underway for the formation of a committee that will comprise of individuals who will work for the initiative to save the environment. Taking note of rise in pollution level in Visakhapatnam, Jagan Mohan directed the officials to carry out immediate action-plan.

AP gets honoured at National Tourism Awards

On September 27, Andhra Pradesh bagged the top honour at the National Tourism Awards 2017-18, presented by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. Andhra Pradesh bagged the Best State Award for overall growth in the tourism category. While Goa and Madhya Pradesh were the joint winners in the Adventure Tourism category and Uttarakhand won the award for the Best Film Promotion-Friendly State. Telangana won the award for the Best State for the innovative use of IT. A total of 76 awards were given under various categories this year.
