As Modi government moves 10 % quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), here's who can avail the reservation

The amendment will be brought in Parliament on Tuesday, and should it be passed in both the houses, the reservation cap will increase from 50 to 60%

In a bid to provide equal opportunities to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the Modi government on Monday passed a resolution which will provide 10% reservation to the EWS over and above the 50% reservation already set aside for the Schedule Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC).

The amendment will be brought in the Parliament on Tuesday, and should it be passed in both the houses, the reservation cap will increase from 50 to 60%. In order for the amendment to be brought up, the government will need to amend the Article 15 and 16 of constitution.  

Here are the criteria for an individual to qualify for the reservation:

  • The household income should be below Rs 8 lakh. Household Income to determine who qualifies as Economically Weaker Sections.
  • Agriculture land below 5 acre 
  • Residential house below 1000 sq.ft.
  • Residential plot below 109 yards in notified municipality
  • Residential plot below 209 yards in non notified municipality area.

As per sources, the reservations will go up from the current 50% to 60% and will be applicable for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) to get reservation in jobs and in education, thereby serving as a huge mode up upliftment. The bill will be caste and religion free, and will focus on providing opportunities to those who are economically backward.
