Assam reports 1,142 new COVID-19 cases, two more deaths

Assam reported 1,142 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the state's tally to 32,228, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Assam reported 1,142 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the state's tally to 32,228, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Two COVID-19 patients also died in the state, raising the toll to 79, he said. Of the new cases, 171 were from Guwahati, 188 from Kamrup and 100 from Darrang, the minister said.

Sarma said 20,542 tests were done in the last 24 hours, of which 1,142 tested positive, which means there was a low positivity rate of 5.55 per cent

The two patients, including a 53-year-old woman from Tinsukia and a 50- year-old man from Dibrugarh, died at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, he said.

The mortality rate in the state is currently at 0.25 per cent, officials said.

Meanwhile, 985 patients were discharged from different hospitals in the state.

So far, 24,040 people have recovered from the disease in Assam.

A three-month-old baby boy and his mother were among those who were recovered and discharged during the day.

They were undergoing treatment at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH).

A total of 1,178 police personnel have so far tested positive and of them, four died and 893 recovered.

"Four of our colleagues made the supreme sacrifice and inspire us every day. After fighting bravely, 168 of our #CoronaWarriors have already joined back duty," Assam Police tweeted.

The first COVID-19 case was detected in the state on March 31.

The current doubling time has increased to 14.5 days from the previous week's 11.4 days.

There are 8,106 active cases in the state, while three patients have migrated out of Assam.

More than 7.74 lakh samples have been tested in the state for COVID-19 so far.
