Earlier on Thursday, while speaking to Republic TV, BMC standing committee chief Yashwant Jadhav  had pinned the blame for the tragic incident on the Railways, stating the responsibility of the bridge belonged to the latter.

"Railways is responsible for this incident. This bridge is the property of railways....It was BMC's responsibility to maintain this bridge. We had asked railways to give us NOC for full repairing work, but they haven't given us NOC. If we had got the NOC, the standing committee would have definitely passed the budget to repair this bridge. But we haven't got the NOC. We are checking who had done the structural audit of the bridge," BMC standing committee chief Yashwant Jadhav has said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for an initial investigation into the matter, demanding the municipal commissioner to "fix the primary responsibility" by Friday evening.

He reviewed the ground situation at the collapse site on Friday, and assured a detailed investigation and revisit of the audit report to hold the accountability in the foot over bridge collapse.

"I have asked the municipal commissioner to probe the matter and fix the primary responsibility of the incident. There's no chance that the defaulter should be spared in such a matter. If audit was done and even then the bridge collapse, then even the audit report is under question. It will be further probed. The people who conducted the audit and declared the bridge to be fit, then they have to be held responsible here. If they said the bridge to be fit, then it is wrong. The audit reports should be revisited," Devendra Fadnavis said while speaking to reporters.
