P Chidambaram, former Union Minister and Congress leader, has been sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail for 14 days in the INX Media case on Thursday. He will be lodged in Jail no.7 till September 19. Earlier in the day, Supreme Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Chidambaram on Thursday, September 5.

Chidambaram's 'VVIP' demands

Chidambaram was arrested on August 21 from his Jor Bagh residence and has been under the CBI custody since. But, it seems like he has been unaffected by the chain of events taking place. He has refrained himself from speaking about his case but he has always found a way to take a swipe at the Central Government. While being sent to the Tihar, taking a dig at the Central Government, Chidambaram said, “I am only worried about the economy.” The Congress leader has made many ‘VVIP’ demands about his custody in Tihar Jail. He has demanded a Z security, western toilet, a separate cell with a cot and a bathroom and medicines.

The 5% taunt and the thumbs-up

On September 3, while he was being taken to CBI custody, the media asked him to give a statement about the ongoing case. Instead, he remarked, “5%. What is 5%? Do you remember 5%?” while taking a dig at the Central Government about the current state of the economy. On August 22, after being remanded in the CBI case, Chidambaram gave a 'thumbs-up' gesture as he emerged out of the Rouse Avenue Court before he was taken away by the CBI.

On August 21, P Chidambaram remained untraceable for 27 hours before he was arrested by the CBI despite having been issued summons by the CBI. He addressed a news briefing at the Congress headquarters the same evening where he maintained that neither he nor his son Karti had done anything wrong. He said, “In the INX Media case, I have not been accused of any offence, nor is anyone else including any member of my family been accused in any offence. In fact, nor has any charge sheet filed by either the CBI or the ED before the court. The FIR recorded by the CBI does not impute to me any wrongdoing yet there is a widespread impression that grave offences have been committed and my son and I have committed those offences. Nothing can be further from the truth spread by pathological liars," he added.
