CJI Ranjan Gogoi recommends Justice Bobde as successor to the Centre

Chief Justice of India (CJI), Ranjan Gogoi who is the 46th CJI of India, has recommended to the Union Law Minister that Justice S.A. Bobde be named the next CJI

Chief Justice of India (CJI), Ranjan Gogoi who is the 46th CJI of India, has recommended that Justice S.A. Bobde should be named the next CJI, in a letter addressed to Union Law Minister.

CJI Gogoi makes an official recommendation 

CJI Gogoi is set to retire on November 17, while in accordance to the tradition it was clear that Justice Bobde will be the next in line for the position, Justice Gogoi made the official recommendation on Thursday, October 17. According to the Memorandum of Procedure, which governs the appointment of members of the higher judiciary, the "appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office". After receiving the Chief Justice's recommendation, the Law Minister puts it before the Prime Minister, who then communicates this to the President.

All you need to know about Justice S.A. Bobde 

Justice Bobde enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978 after he obtained his LLB degree from Nagpur University. Justice Bobde has practised for over 21 years at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court and also made appearances before the Principal seat and the Supreme Court. In 1998, he was designated as a Senior Advocate and subsequently elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. In 2012, he became Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and in 2013, he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court and will retire on April 23, 2021. 

At present, he is the second senior-most judge of the country and is also serving as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University at Mumbai and Nagpur campuses. He has been included in several important benches in the country including the Ayodhya dispute and petitions against firecrackers. According to sources, Justice Bobde will take the oath as the 47th CJI on November 18.
