The CPI(M) appeared to begrudgingly 'accept' the Supreme Court's final verdict in the Ayodhya dispute on Saturday, not failing to add a caveat that it found certain "premises of the judgement objectionable."

"As far as the judgement itself is concerned, there are certain premises that Court has used for its judgement which are questionable," Brinda Karat told Republic TV in an exclusive interview on Saturday after the verdict.

Karat said CPI(M) had always maintained that in the absence of a negotiating settlement to such a long-standing dispute, they had to accept a judicial verdict. "And now the verdict has come and therefore, my party is very clear that it has to be accepted. At the same time, the Court has held that the demolition of Babri Masjid was wrong and it was illegal. My party has demanded that the petitions which are pending since 1991 against those leaders who are responsible they should be expedited," she added.

The CPI(M) leader said Supreme Court judgement had also noted significantly the relevance of 1991 protection of religious places and places of worship act and that should be adhered to. "That is an important reminder for those who would like to use this judgement as a precedent," she noted.
