Cyclone Vayu: BIG TWIST as fair chance Cyclone Vayu may drift away from Gujarat's Saurashtra coast and just skirt Porbandar', says Skymet in latest update

In a new twist in the course of the Cyclone Vayu, the Indian Meteorological Department has alerted that the Cyclone will not hit Gujarat and may drift away from the Saurashtra coast.

In a new twist in the course of the Cyclone Vayu, the Indian Meteorological Department has alerted that the Cyclone will not hit Gujarat and may drift away from the Saurashtra coast. Furthermore, as per the Skymet Weather, Vayu is tracking north-northwestwards and the very severe cyclone may just skirt the Gujarat coast near Porbandar, close to Dwarka or Okha coast on its journey.

On its journey, Vayu's effect will be seen on the coastal regions as there will be heavy wind speed and heavy rain, said Manorama Mohanty, scientist at India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad.

Very severe cyclone Vayu which at present is Category 2 storm may weaken into a Category 1 storm. However, the system would be packed with the winds to the tune of 135 kmph to 145 kmph gusting up to 175 kmph may cause damage.

On Wednesday, the Airports Authority of India announced that flight operations will remain suspended at five airports in Gujarat for 24 hours from midnight Wednesday to minimise the damage to airport infrastructure and to avoid inconvenience to passengers due to the cyclone.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 40 rescue & relief teams along the coastal areas of Gujarat and Diu in the wake of anticipated cyclonic storm Vayu for rescue & relief operations.
