Cyclone Vayu Intensifies in Gujarat : Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Diu and Veraval to witness thunderstorm and heavy rains On June 13

Cyclone Vayu fast moving towards the North is likely to hit the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Diu and Veraval on 13th Jun early morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that the Cyclone Vayu has intensified into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' and will make landfall on June 13 with wind speed around 150 kmph gusting upto 170 kmph.

Cyclone Vayu fast moving towards the North is likely to hit the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Diu and Veraval on 13th June early morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that the Cyclone Vayu has intensified into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' and will make landfall on June 13 with a wind speed around 150 kmph gusting up to 170 kmph.

Anticipating the impact of Cyclone Vayu, schools and colleges have declared a holiday on June 13 and 14 and exams have also been postponed.  Orange alerted cyclonic storm is expected to bring widespread rain all along India’s western coast, as per IMD.

NDRF is closely monitoring the development and has mobilised 36 teams for pre-positioning in the vulnerable locations of Saurashtra and Kutch in consultation with local governments. IAF choppers have also been deployed for probable evacuation.

The IMD also anticipates some amount of structural damage and arrangements are being made for the proactive evacuation of 3 lakh civilians from temporary to permanent structures.

The wind speed at 170km/hr is also anticipated to surpass the expectation of 155km/hr as per reports of June 11.

Keeping the situation in mind, Mr  Rupani has also canceled the three-day Shala Praveshotsav (Welcoming to the school festival) that was earlier scheduled to be held from June 13 to 15 across Gujarat. 

IMD states “not unprecedented, since  Cyclone Fani was a lot worse”

The Government of Gujarat is also on the lookout to mirror the way the Government of Odisha managed Fani and thus is keeping in constant touch with the Chief Minister of Odisha.

After IMD's issuing warning over Cyclone 'Vayu' hitting the Western Coast on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness of State and Central government to deal with the concerned to deal with the situation arising out of Cyclone ‘Vayu’.

In the meeting Shah has directed officers to prepare safety evacuation measures, and also directed the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, Army & Air Force to keep their control rooms functioning and on standby to carry out aerial surveillance when necessary.
