Delegation of lawyers to meet Delhi Police officials to settle dispute

Representatives of Coordination Committee of Bar associations of Delhi are going to meet senior Police officials at Police Headquarters in Delhi at 4 pm today.

Representatives of the Coordination Committee of Bar associations of Delhi are set to meet senior Police officials at Police Headquarters in Delhi at 4 pm on Thursday. This comes a day after the Delhi High Court suggested both lawyers and Delhi police, to meet and amicably resolve their dispute. The police and lawyers had a violent scuffle outside Tis Hazari Court complex on November 2 over a parking dispute which left several injured.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Thursday also asked Bar Council of Delhi to make a list of representatives of Delhi Bar Association and send the same to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal so that a meeting can be convened between Delhi Police and lawyers over the same. BCI on Tuesday condemned the Tiz Hazari court scuffle incident and had written to coordination committees and all-district Bar association to call off the strike and stop violence inside the court premises immediately. In a press release, it was announced that strict action would be taken against the lawyers who indulged in vandalism and acts of violence.

Meanwhile, a petition filed by the lawyers seeking a ban on reporting by media persons on the ongoing tussle between Delhi police and lawyers in Delhi didn't stand ground in the Supreme Court. The Delhi HC on Wednesday had also rejected any ban on media freedom to cover the sensitive case that has dominated national headlines for days.

Police-advocates clash 

The tussle between the lawyers and the police in Delhi has been going on since the clashes outside the Tis Hazari court on November 2 when a dispute broke out over a parking spot. On November 3, the Delhi High Court ordered a judicial inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the clashes between the police and lawyers outside the Tis Hazari court. The inquiry will be completed within 6 weeks. Meanwhile, Republic accessed a shocking video on Monday in which a lawyer can be seen assaulting a policeman outside the Saket court in Delhi. The cop does not respond and simply drives away from the spot. Sources reveal that this incident happened right outside the main gate of the Saket court.
