Delhi: 2 bike-borne men snatch woman's chain; she fights them & wins

Two bike-borne men tried snatching away a women's chain in broad daylight in New Delhi, but ended up getting thrashed as she and her daughter fought back

In a horrifying yet awe-inspiring incident caught on CCTV footage, a woman and her daughter from Nangloi, Delhi, thrashed a chain snatcher who had tried to rob them. As seen in the CCTV visuals, two bike-borne men tried snatching away the woman's necklace, but to no avail, as she managed to get hold of them right after their attempted chain-snatching. Soon, passersbys jumped in to their rescue and attacked the snatchers themselves. The chain snatchers were later arrested by police.

The lion-hearted women fight back 

The CCTV footage shows a woman and her daughter walking on streets of Nangloi in Delhi, when two men on a bike are seen approaching them. They try to slow down their bike and snatch away the woman's necklace. The women react immediately, running behind and grabbing one of the snatchers. As the men lose their balance and fall, they are dragged down, thrashed and beaten. Meanwhile, a car stops and the man inside jumps to help the women prevent the thieves from escaping. One chain-snatcher gets beaten mercilessly, while the other manages to escape.

Chain Snatching: A growing problem

There has been an increase in chain snatching incidents over the years. According empirical data, most of these incidents are committed by first-timers, mostly youngsters, especially teenagers, who want easy money. As per statistics provided by the Delhi Police in 2018 till September 30, the total number of cases of snatching reported was 5,034, which is 18 snatchings a day at an average. According to IPC sections 392 (robbery) and 379 (theft), chain snatchers are imprisoned for an average duration of 3 to 7 years.
