Delhi: Journalist's suspected attackers injured in police encounter

Two criminals who are suspected to have attacked an ANI journalist have been injured in an encounter with the police in the Nizamuddin area of South Delhi

According to reports, two criminals have been injured in an encounter that broke out between Delhi Police Special Cell (DPSC) and the criminals, near Nizamuddin area in South Delhi on Friday. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Special Cell in Delhi, Sanjeev Yadav, “the injured criminals are suspected to be involved in the attack on Asian News International journalist Joymala Bagchi, last month.”

The Incident

On September 22, the victim had gone shopping near Chittaranjan Park and was returning back at around 6 pm in an auto-rickshaw. At this juncture, two bike-borne miscreants came close to her auto-rickshaw when the traffic movement was slow. The woman journalist suffered injuries on her face and hands after they dragged her out of the moving auto-rickshaw. They snatched her phone and managed to flee the spot. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital as she was bleeding profusely. Later, she was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

'I hope culprits get the strictest punishment'

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while talking to the media, condemned the incident and expressed hope that the culprits would get the strictest punishment. "I got to know about an incident where a woman journalist from ANI was attacked by chain snatchers. It is very unfortunate and saddening. I hope culprits get the strictest punishment. All of us together need to work to reduce the crime incidents in Delhi," Kejriwal observed.
