Delhi Police assures journalist assault case 'will be solved soon'

Commenting on the attack on the woman journalist in Chittaranjan Park, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central Delhi, Mandeep Randhawa stated on Thursday that the police had gathered "vital clues" in the case. He further added that they were in the possession of a lot of information. While asserting that the case would be solved soon, he revealed that the police had increased patrolling in risky areas to prevent such incidents in the future.

The incident

On September 22, the victim had gone shopping near Chittaranjan Park and was returning back at around 6 pm in an auto-rickshaw. At this juncture, two bike-borne miscreants came close to her auto-rickshaw when the traffic movement was slow. The woman journalist suffered injuries on her face and hands after they dragged her out of the moving auto-rickshaw. They snatched her phone and managed to flee the spot. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital as she was bleeding profusely. Later, she was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Caught on CCTV camera

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while talking to the media, condemned the incident and expressed hope that the culprits would get the strictest punishment.

"I got to know about an incident where a woman journalist from ANI (Asian News International) was attacked by chain snatchers. It is very unfortunate and saddening. I hope culprits get the strictest punishment. All of us together need to work to reduce the crime incidents in Delhi," Kejriwal observed.

While the police registered an FIR and formed a special team to probe the matter on Monday, it suspended an assistant sub-inspector and two constables for inaction a day later. Subsequently, they revealed that the suspects had been caught on the CCTV camera.
