Digvijaya Singh slams decision to change uniforms of the Rajya Sabha Marshals

Rajya Sabha MP and veteran Cong leader Digvijaya Singh slammed the new RS Marshals uniform and tweeted that "I have not understood the reason for this change."

As the Rajya Sabha opened its landmark 250th session on Monday, November 18, its marshals got a makeover with their uniforms being restyled from traditional Indian attire comprising turbans to military-style outfits with caps. This makeover in unform has received sharp criticism, with veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh questioning the change in uniform. The veteran Congress leader took to Twitter and tweeted "I have not understood the reason for this change."

Fellow Congress veteran leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh also slammed the new attire during the opening of the Winter Session of the Parliament on Monday. The veteran leader questioned, "Are you imposing Martial Law?" To which, the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu urged the Congress leader not to raise such an 'insignificant query at such a significant hour'.

Uniforms to be revisited 

The chairman of the Rajya Sabha and Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday stated that new dress code of the Rajya Sabha marshals would be reconsidered. This comes a day after it received widespread criticism. As the Rajya Sabha began proceedings on Tuesday morning, stated that the Rajya Sabha secretariat has been asked to revisit the new uniforms. The reason for this is that the uniforms resemble that of Army officials. This comes after various politicians raised objections over the dark military-style uniforms.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address

During the historic  250th session of the Rajya Sabha which kicked off on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the role of the Upper House of the Parliament cannot be forgotten as it is the Rajya Sabha that has worked towards giving a direction to the country. PM Modi stated that the Rajya Sabha has passed several bills that have gone on to become laws in the country, naming several key pieces of legislation from the recent past.

PM Modi further stated, "The same house has done the work of giving direction to the country by grouping towards One Nation-One Tax as GST. The removal of Articles 370 and 35A for the unity and integrity of the country first started in this House, after that it happened in the Lok Sabha."
