In a development that cannot be understated, Suresh Prabhu, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, has confirmed that the telecom commission has approved data and voice services in flights over Indian airspace.

He's written:

"Exciting times ahead in the Indian skies as Telecom Commission approves data and voice services in flights over Indian airspace!"

The minister, who also oversees the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has also written about implementation about the move, saying that he will follow up to ensure the earliest implementation of the move.

"I will follow up closely to ensure earliest implementation. We remain committed in improving the services to our air passengers, making their travel delighful and hassle-free."

In January, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had issued recommendations on in-flight connectivity (IFC) where airlines would be allowed to offer mobile and internet services so long as certain security-related conditions were met.

As per sources, Spice Jet will be the first airline to implement this.

The Telecom Commission has also approved TRAI's recommendations on Internet telephony, as well a proposal to create an ombudsman to deal with telecom grievances. The ombudsman will be set up under TRAI and will reqiuire an amendment to the TRAI act.
