The Congress party on Wednesday wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs citing a 'sniper threat' to party president Rahul Gandhi stating that a green laser light was seen being pointed at him while he was addressing media on Wednesday. However, speaking in the matter, the MHA spokesperson has told Republic that the ministry has not received any letter regarding the breach in security of the Congress party president.

As the ministry came across reports of the "sniper threat" to Rahul Gandhi's life, it asked the Director (SPG) to verify the factual position in the matter.

"MHA has not yet received any letter regarding the alleged breach in security of Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi. However, as soon as MHA’s attention was drawn to reports that there was an incident of “green light” being pointed at him yesterday in Amethi, the Director (SPG) was asked to verify the factual position."

After going through the video clipping mentioned by the Congress party, the Director (SPG) informed the Home Ministry that the "green light" shown in the video was found to be that of the mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, the MHA spokesperson told.

"Director (SPG) has informed MHA that they have gone through the Video Clipping of the incident very closely. The “green light” shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Shri Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate at Amethi.  Director (SPG) has also informed MHA that this position was conveyed to the personal staff of Shri Rahul Gandhi.  Dir (SPG) has confirmed that there was no security implication whatsoever."

Senior Congress party leaders Ahmed Patel and Randeep Singh Surjewala wrote to the Home Ministry on April 10 stating that a 'sniper laser' was seen being pointed at Rahul Gandhi as many as "seven times" during his media interaction. Claiming that Rahul Gandhi's life is at risk by a 'possible assassin', the party demanded the ministry to take note of the security threat on their party president's life.

Congress attached the video of the incident with the letter to the ministry. The green laser light can also be seen pointed at Rahul Gandhi multiple times in a video tweeted by the party:
