IMD issues cyclone warning for coastal areas as depression over Arabian Sea intensifies

With the monsoon expected to make landfall across the entirety of the Indian sub-continent in coming days, the coastal states have also been told to brace for a cyclone brewing in the Arabian Sea which could lead to incessant rains in the region.

With the monsoon expected to make landfall across the entirety of the Indian sub-continent in coming days, the coastal states have also been told to brace for a cyclone brewing in the Arabian Sea which could lead to incessant rains in the region.  

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a depression has formed over Southeast Arabian Sea located near latitude 12.5°N and longitude 71.0°E over and is about 240 km northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep). It will intensify into a deep depression through Monday and will become a cyclone subsequently within the next 24 hours. IMD has already issued a cyclone warning for the fishermen and has asked them not to venture into the rough seas for the next 3 days. 

Rains resulting from the cyclone are expected to lash places along the Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan and Goa coasts accompanied by gusty winds at the speed of 30-40 km per hour and is expected to go up to 90-100 km per hour by June 13. The warning has also been issued for the people living along the coasts adjoining the Bay of Bengal. 

The IMD issued a bulletin that warned the fishermen to not venture into the seas during the next four days. The warning issued reads" The fishermen are advised not to venture into Southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area, along Kerala and Karnataka on 10and 11, East-central Arabian Sea and along & off Maharashtra Coast on 11& 12; the north-east Arabian sea and off Gujrat coast on 12 and 13." It also asked those who are in the sea to return as soon as possible, before the storm made landfall. The height of the waves is expected to rise from 1-2 meters to 3-4 meters in the coming days.
