IMD issues 'orange alert' in Kerala, Karnataka as heavy rains lash

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert' for heavy rains in Kerala and Karnataka as heavy rains are lashing the states causing floods due to overflowing of rivers. According to the weather forecast agency, as the North-East monsoon has become active, the States are witnessing heavy downpour. The IMD has directed the administration of the states to take necessary action. According to reports, an orange alert by the IMD states "be prepared to face any situation arising out of severe weather condition".

Rivers overflowing above danger level

According to the IMD, river Ghatprabha at Gokak falls in Belgaum district of Karnataka was flowing at 542.02 meters, which is above its danger level of 542.00 meters, causing floods in several parts of the state. With this, river Krishna at Navalgund in Dharwad district of Karnataka is also flowing above the danger level. It is flowing at 565.95 meters, above its danger level of 564 meters. Further, in Kerala, river Pamba at Thumpamon and river Kaveri at Palakdavu are flowing above the danger level. While river Pamba is flowing 10.55 meters above its danger level of 10 meters, river Kaveri is flowing 0.73 meters above its danger mark of 6.9 meters.

IMD forecast

The weather forecast agency has predicted heavy rainfall over Karnataka and Kerala for the next few days. The districts which have got an IMD alert include Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod.

Water-logging in Pune

Meanwhile, heavy rains caused water-logging in several parts of Pune on Tuesday morning. According to reports, Kondhwa and Sahakar Nagar areas in Pune recorded 51.50 mm and 47.00 mm of rainfall. Further reports stated that a bus carrying 23 passengers was stuck in the waterlogged area due to heavy rainfall. Fire officials visited the spot to help the people. Along with it, a few houses at the BT Kavde Road in the city were also affected by the heavy rains. Pune is likely to receive more rains accompanied by a thunderstorm on Wednesday, stated the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) report.
