Indian Embassy in Kathmandu organises yoga event ahead of International Day of Yoga

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu organised a yoga event on Saturday ahead of the fifth International Day of Yoga which will be celebrated on June 21.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu organised a yoga event on Saturday ahead of the fifth International Day of Yoga, which is celebrated every year on June 21. 

The yoga event was celebrated in Nepal's Syangboche, just above Namche Bazaar, which is a gateway point for mountaineers and trekkers to access the Mount Everest route.

Several members from women and youth groups from Solukhumbu District participated in the event. The attendee groups were Khumjung and Khunde Drinking Water Management Committee, Khumjung and Khunde Women and Youth Groups, officers of Sagarmatha National Park, employees of Everest View Hotel. In addition, scores of enthusiastic locals and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri with his embassy officers participated in the event as well, as per a statement released by Indian Embassy in Nepal.

The primary objective of the program was to highlight the importance of yoga in daily life and to spread peace and harmony across all continents, nations, and people. This was the first time a yoga event was celebrated at the base camp of Mount Everest, added the statement.

Those participating were soon joined by tourists, mountaineers, and researchers. At around 17,600 feet above the sea level, summiteer Bharat Sharma from Gujarat and other mountaineers practiced yoga at the base of the world's highest peak, hence creating history. Lately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting yoga on his social media handles. Here's one of the tweets where PM Modi has mentioned the benefits of Bhujangasan:

 India is scheduled to celebrate International Yoga Day along with the rest of the world on June 21.
