Dismissing rumours about the lack of medical facilities in Kashmir, Jammu-Kashmir's Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR-J&K), on Saturday, has tweeted about the current situation in the Valley. In a series of tweets, DIPR-J&K has highlighted the number of surgeries performed in Srinagar. It also talks about OPD  and other medical services available to the local residents. The department has also listed the stock of medicines and deemed it adequate till September end. It also states that additional order has been placed to last till March 2020.

Here are the medical service details shared by DIPR-J&K:

Surgeries

• Nearly 5000 major surgeries performed in hospitals in Srinagar from August 5 till date.
• Srinagar's GMC and associate hospitals handled 3000 surgeries - 700 in SMHS Hospital, 800 in  Bone & Joints hospital, 400 in Super Speciality hospital. Lal Ded- Kashmir's maternity hospital handled 3000 operations

Healthcare services

• Health care services have been usual with 95,000 patients receiving OPD, 10000+ patients admitted in IPDs. This includes 35000 OPDs and 3700 IPD in SKIMS, 26000 OPDs and 1500 IPDs in SKIMS MCH. Apart from this, emergency rooms treated 28000 patients.
• Over 1 lakh lab procedures like MRI and CT Scan performed during this period (Aug 5 to date). This includes around 5500 X-Rays, over 6000 USGS, around 2000 ECGs, around 2000 CT Scans, 220 MRIs and some 750 super-specialty procedures.
• Different medical investigations of patients were conducted in SKIMS MCH totaling to 70000.
• These figures are indicative of usual healthcare services in Kashmir, stated DIPR-J&K. It elaborates that while there has been a 20% drop in services, that is usually the case during festivals or major events in the month.

Medicine stock

• Supplies have been made in two equal halves for two six-month periods per annum. The first half is still sufficient to last until the end of September. The second half of the order that will last until March 2020 will be received and distributed as usual before October. Additional requirements if any are being provided immediately.
• The administration has provided funds to several hospitals for procuring additional medicines to cover requirements that patients usually get from retail markets. 
• Staff attendance at these hospitals is also at 95% throughout the period.

The department categorically states that reports suggesting a shortage of medicines or healthcare crisis in Kashmir are therefore clearly baseless.

Recent reports from Kashmir have said that there are difficulties faced by local Kashmiris with the continued communication blocking. But officials have stated on Sunday that communication curbs in Kashmir have been eased to some extent and landline telephone services restored in most places across the Valley in view of the improving situation. The process of fully restoring the landline connectivity, baring in a few pockets, is underway and more telephone lines would be restored soon, they added. However, the services continued to remain snapped in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and Press Enclave.

Apart from this, the SA chief and the Army chief has also visited the Valley to ascertain the security measures as fresh threats from Pakistan have emerged. While fresh restrictions have been imposed in certain areas in wake of Pakistani threats, the Home Ministry has said that 65% of the retail chemist shops were open and have been providing medicines to the end-user retail shops. However, Markets across Kashmir continued to remain shut for as shops and other business establishments were closed, officials said last Saturday. Public transport too was off the roads, they added.
