Independent MLA from Vadgam, Gujrat Jignesh Mevani has attempted to create fear about Modi government's proposal to move 10% quota for the Economically Weaker Sections.

Jignesh Mevani in a tweet said that "Why is the BJP is giving 10% quota to EWS?  What I have found out after speaking to RSS is extremely dangerous. The RSS has always been against caste-based reservation. Now, they will begin to move for poverty-based quota. Then, they will end caste-based quota meant for SC, ST and OBC and have only a poverty-based quota"

The Narendra Modi-led NDA government on Monday had resolved to bring in a constitutional amendment to increase reservation quotas to benefit Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

As per sources, the reservations will go up from the current 50% to 60% and will be applicable for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) to get reservation in jobs and in education, thereby serving as a huge mode of upliftment. The new reservations will be applicable to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) across religions.

A constitutional amendment bill on the quota was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8.
