Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha Kapil Sibal on Wednesday spoke about Pakistan’s role in escalating tensions in Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that Pakistan has been quoting Indian politicians out of desperation. This comes after Pakistan's Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, quoted Rahul Gandhi in a letter to the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on August 27. Mazari said in her letter: "Acts of violence have been acknowledged by mainstream politicians, such as the leader of the Congress party Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who has noted "people dying" in Jammu and Kashmir, in light of events "going very wrong there."

Kapil Sibal’s Reaction

Kapil Sibal has said that “Pakistan has been trying to create distress in Kashmir for decades. The terrorists in Kashmir come from the country of Pakistan and they endorse the internal despair in Kashmir to their benefit. Pakistan has no options left now and they have been quoting the Indian politicians in desperation. I feel that the government should take this up seriously and be alert of Pakistan’s actions as there is a possibility of them disturbing the peace in Kashmir.”

Rahul Gandhi’s Response

Rahul Gandhi responded to being quoted in Pakistan's letter to UNHRC. He said, “I disagree with this Govt. on many issues. But, let me make this absolutely clear: Kashmir is India’s internal issue & there is no room for Pakistan or any other foreign country to interfere in it.” Rahul Gandhi went ahead and said that Pakistan is the reason for the distress in Kashmir.

Mehbooba Mufti’s comments on the Kashmir issue were also quoted by the Pak Human Rights Minister in her letter. BJP Rajya Sabha MP, Swapna Dasgupta has said, “If some people want to be useful pawns for Pakistan, they should also consider the implication of that. Unfortunately, they seem completely unmindful of the consequences of their actions. This incident was one grim example of that. I hope they learn a few lessons and stop doing this otherwise they can continue to be an extension to the foreign policy of Pakistan.”
