Karnataka: Couple kills elderly relatives to repay debt, arrested

The Karnataka police on Saturday arrested two persons for allegedly murdering an elderly couple and seized over five lakh cash and gold ornaments from them.

The Karnataka police on Saturday arrested two persons for allegedly murdering an elderly couple. According to reports, the accused, identified as Venkatesh CH, who by profession is a cab driver and his wife Arpita were related to the deceased couple. The police have seized more than Rs 5 lakh cash and gold ornaments from the accused. 

The incident

According to reports, the accused duo had several loans amounting to Rs 10 lakhs. Instead of paying the debt, they decided to murder the elderly couple, Chandregowda (63) and Lakhshmamma (55), for money. Reports stated that the duo visited the victims' house and hit them in the head with a spanner before looting jewellery and cash from the house. According to the police, the accused then ran away to their friend's house in a village in Dakshin Kannada district.

The accused were nabbed by the police on Saturday. During the investigation, the police have seized 305 grams of gold and Rs 5.04 lakh cash.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had also committed the murder of an elderly couple in a similar manner in Mandya District in July this year. They killed the couple before ransacking their house and taking away valuables and cash. Further investigation is going on, stated the police.

Serial killer Cyanide Mohan sentenced to death

In another incident, a Karnataka serial rapist and murderer Cyanide Mohan was sentenced to death in one of the rape and murder cases against him by a Mangaluru court on Thursday. According to reports, the sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge Sayeedunnisa handed down the death penalty to 'Cyanide' Mohan for raping and murdering the woman at the Kempegowda bus station in Bengaluru on October 22, 2005. This is the fourth murder case in which he has been awarded death sentence. As per reports, in the two previous verdicts of capital punishment, the sentences were commuted to life imprisonment and five years' imprisonment by the High Court.
