A visiting contingent of 20 foreigners was rescued from Karnataka's Koppal District on Monday amid flooding in the state.

A visiting contingent of 20 foreigners was rescued from Karnataka's Koppal District on Monday amid flooding in the state.

Nearly 20 foreigners stuck in flooded water of the Tungabhadra River in Virupapur Island in Koppal District were rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. Apparently, the foreigners were stuck in a resort. Among those rescued, 12 are Germans, five from France, one from Switzerland, one from USA and one more from Lithuania.

In Karnataka, the casualty toll from the floods has risen to 40, with more than 5 lakh people having been evacuated. Here's a complete breakdown:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah undertook an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in some affected areas onboard an army helicopter. He was accompanied by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Suresh Angadi, Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore and Hukkeri BJP MLA Umesh Katti.

Earlier, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to next of kin of the people who lost their lives in the floods that have crippled the state. "20 National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams, 10 Army teams, five Navy teams, and two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are engaged in rescue operations," Yediyurappa said. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had also visited the flood-affected areas in Belgaum. Meanwhile, all schools and colleges -- government and private -- in affected flood-hit districts will remain closed till August 15.
