Kashmir railway services to be resumed; trial run held at Srinagar

The Indian Railways on Monday conducted a trial run between Banihal and Baramulla ahead of the resumption of train services in Kashmir. The train services in the region were stopped soon after the abrogation of Article 370 in the erstwhile state. The security and railway officials were present during the trial run, which comes even as mini-buses began plying on some routes in the city on Monday. The railways conducted two successful trial runs on the Srinagar-Baramulla stretch before services are resumed on Tuesday, officials said. On Sunday, Railways officers had said that if everything goes well, the train services can be restored in the Valley from November 12.

Several areas of the city witnessed traffic jams

Officials said to ANI that on Monday few mini-buses plied on Batwara-Batamaloo route through the city centre for the first time since 5 August. Inter-district cabs and auto-rickshaws also plied in the city and elsewhere in the valley, they added. Private transport was plying unhindered and several areas of the city witnessed traffic jams, the officials said. The Traffic Department has deployed additional personnel on duty to regulate traffic flow. Markets opened only for few hours in the morning and downed their shutters around noon, the officials said.

Abrogation of Article 370

The Parliament abrogated Article 370 on August 5 and bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories namely - Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh. On October 31, the state was officially bifurcated and the new union territories came into being.
