Kerala Floods 2018: Latest disaster management figures released, even as Rahul Gandhi visits worst-hit Alappuzha district. Here's all you need to know

Latest figures have been released regarding the casualties and displacement caused by floods that have debilitated Kerala over the last month, even as Congress president Rahul Gandhi, back from his visit to German and the UK, has arrived at the state along with senior leaders from his party.

As per the state's Disaster Management control room, between May 29 and August 28, 474 people have lost their lives as a result of the calamity. In addition, 15 persons are missing, while 70 persons are injured or hospitalised.  The report reveals that there are 1,97,518 people currently lodged at 750 camps that have been set up across the state. Over half these people and camps are in the state's Alappuzha district.

Day 1 - Tuesday, August 28

Day 2 - Wednesday, August 29th

The unabating rains had necessitated the opening of over 80 dams in the state, many for the first time, in order to prevent overflow. The Army, Navy, Air Force and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had been deployed on a war footing to conduct rescue and relief operations, while a number of states had contributed aid and essential materials. Following the Prime Minister's visit to the state, the Centre announced a Rs 500 crore (plus Rs 100 crore that was announced earlier) allocation for the state, divided into various buckets depending on the needs of the people of Kerala during different points of the recovery process. This included expedited acceptance of insurance claims, provision of employment under MGNREGA, prioritising those who have lost kutcha houses in government housing schemes, and the restoration of government infrastructure that had suffered damage or had to be taken down because of the floods.

The Kerala Chief Minister's office has pegged the losses caused to the state from the floods at almost Rs 20,000 crore.
