LIVE updates: Supreme Court to hear pleas challenging the 10% quota bill for Economically Weaker Section

The Supreme Court will hear the pleas challenging the quota bill granting 10% reservation to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of general category. The plea, challenges the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 was filed by NGO Youth for Equality. The plea seeks the quashing of the bill saying that backwardness for the purpose of reservation cannot be defined by "economic status alone".  Follow LIVE updates here.

The Supreme Court will hear the pleas challenging the quota bill granting 10% reservation to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of general category. 

The plea, challenging the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 which paved the way for grant of reservation to poor general category candidates, was filed by NGO Youth for Equality. 

The plea seeks the quashing of the bill saying that backwardness for the purpose of reservation cannot be defined by "economic status alone".

Supreme Court issues notice to the central government on the plea by Youth for Equality challenging the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections. 

SC says they are examining the issue. It has asked the central government to respond.
