The Election Commission announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha polls at 5 pm on Sunday, setting in motion the biggest democratic exercise in the world involving nearly 90 crore voters.

The Election Commission announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha polls at 5 pm on Sunday, setting in motion the biggest democratic exercise in the world involving nearly 90 crore voters. The elections will be held for 543 seats of the Lok Sabha on approximately 10 lakh polling booths. The tenure of the current Lok Sabha ends on June 3. The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases.
Immediately after the Election Commission announced the poll dates, BSP chief Mayawati took to Twitter and "welcomed the EC's move". She asserted that crores of poor, labourers, farmers, women, youth etc participate in great strength in polling.

Furthermore, she mounted a scathing attack on the ruling government by calling them "Anti-poor and pro-capitalist". She also added that India's 130 crore peace loving people certainly deserve a better government".
The applicability of the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct will commence from March 10, as announced by the Chief Election Commission. This is scheduled to regulate political parties and political candidates before the elections. The rules apply to issues relating speeches, polling day, booth, the content of election manifestos and a general code. This code of conduct stays in force from the date of announcement to the day of result. The result will be announced on May 23.
