In a major relief for the citizens before the onset of the festival season, the government on Tuesday (August 29) slashed the prices of cooking gas cylinders in the country. The price cut applies to the consumers both in the general category and those under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). The reduced prices will be effective from August 30 and will benefit about 31 crore domestic LPG consumers in the country.

As per the government release, the price of a 14.2 Kg LPG cylinder for PMUY consumers will be reduced by Rs 200 in all markets across the country. This reduction is in addition to the existing targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder, which will continue. The final price of the LPG cylinder will vary in different cities. For example, for PMUY households, the effective price in Delhi after this reduction will be Rs 703 per cylinder. It may be noted that there are 9.6 Cr PMUY beneficiary families in the country.

After the price cut takes effect, the general consumers will also have to pay Rs 200 less for the 14.2 Kg cylinder. For example, in Delhi, from the existing Rs 1,103 per cylinder, the price will come down to a more affordable Rs 903 per cylinder for the general consumer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "This is a gift to crores of my sisters of the country on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Our Government will always do everything possible that improves people's quality of life and benefits the poor and middle class."

The reduction in cooking gas prices reflects the Government's commitment to prioritise the well-being of its citizens and ensure access to essential commodities at reasonable rates.
