M Venkaiah Naidu: 'Instances of fake and paid news are disturbing'

Speaking at the ceremony to commemorate the centennial of 'Samaja', Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu warned against the menace of fake as well as paid news.

While speaking at the ceremony to commemorate the centennial of the Odia newspaper ‘Samaja’ on Sunday in Cuttack, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu warned against the menace of fake news as well as paid news. He opined he was disturbed by the growing examples in this regard. Naidu also stated that a handful of journalists were bringing a bad name to the entire community. He implored them to recall the Indian value system and ethics.

He said, "Media has an important role to play in a democracy. Instances of fake and paid news are disturbing. Few people are bringing a bad name to the journalistic community. I would like to caution everybody to see that we live by our value system and ethics."

‘Journalism is a mission’ 

Naidu also highlighted the need to separate opinion from pure news. He observed that the race for ratings should not dictate the style of journalism. Moreover, the Vice President requested the media to showcase positive stories. According to him, it should be a vehicle for changing the status quo.
