MHA announces that Goa CM Manohar Parrikar's funeral rites to be performed with full military honours

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that the final rites on mortal remains of late Manohar Parrikar would be performed with full military honours.

The Joint Secretary of Union ministry of Home Affairs S K Shahi issued an order on Sunday which said that the Ministry of Defence is requested to make arrangements for State funeral with full military honours.

The mortal remains of Parrikar would be cremated at Miramar beach at 5 p.m. on Monday before which they would be on display at BJP’s Goa office in Panaji and also at Kala Academy premises in the capital city.

“It has been decided by Government that State funeral will be accorded to the departed dignitary,” Shahi has said in the circular.

Parrikar passed away at his private residence on Sunday evening, and his body was kept there during the entire night.“The mortal remains would be brought to BJP office in the morning where they will be kept for one hour before taking them to Kala Academy premises,” BJP Goa spokesman said.

His mortal remains to be taken to Kala Academy from the BJP office for the public to pay their final respects. 

The mortal remains would then be taken for cremation at Miramar beach, next to the memorial of first Goa Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar who was cremated there. 

Parrikar, 63, had passed away on Sunday evening after his year long fight with pancreatic ailment.

The central government has announced national mourning on Monday, officials earlier said. The national flag will fly at half-mast across the country.

The Goa government announced on Sunday that it would observe seven days of state mourning, from March 18, 2019 to March 24, 2019.

A statement from the government said:

"The Government has expressed profound sorrow on the sad demise of Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, in the state of Goa on March 17, 2019.  As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days State Mourning will be observed throughout the state of Goa from 18/03/2019 to 24/03/2019 both days inclusive. During the period of State Mourning the National Flag will fly at Half Mast on all the buildings throughout the state of Goa where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment."
