New CJI Sharad Bobde proposes use of Artificial Intelligence in courts

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde who will be succeeding Justice Ranjan Gogoi has proposed the usage of high-end technology including Artificial Intelligence in court

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, who will be succeeding Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has proposed the usage of high-end technology including Artificial Intelligence in courts. Justice Bobde who will be the 47th Chief Justice of India has asserted that there may be a need for some minor changes in the justice system of the country by the inclusion of the use of technology such as artificial intelligence. 

"Justice delivery system is good, it might require some minor changes, including the use of technology like artificial intelligence. It's a good system, you need to use some other things," Justice Bobde told ANI.

'Need long term and short term measures'

He said the justice delivery system is good, but also pressed on the need to introduce some long term and short-term measures to make the justice delivery system better. "There are long term measures and short-term measures. Long term measures are legal education, and short-term measures are better staffing, better arrangements," he added.

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, who has been appointed as the 47th Chief Justice of India on Tuesday, has heard several key cases and is currently a part of the 5-judge Constitution bench which will soon deliver its judgement in the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case. Justice Bobde belongs to a family of lawyers from Maharashtra, he was part of a nine-judge Bench of the Supreme Court which in August 2017 declared the right to privacy as a fundamental right of an individual. Justice Bobde, the second senior-most judge in the apex court, will succeed incumbent Ranjan Gogoi who will demit office on November 17. Justice Bobde is expected to take oath on November 18, a day after CJI Ranjan Gogoi demits office. The oath will be administered by President Ram Nath Kovind. Top dignitaries including senior ministers of the Central government and other judges from the Supreme Court and the High Courts are expected to attend the ceremony.
