NIT Srinagar set to reopen on October 15, announces HRD Ministry

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar will reopen on October 15, announced the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry on Friday. The institute was closed on August 3 for nearly 74 days, ahead of the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370. The BJP-led Central government abrogated Article 370 on August 5, revoking the special status given to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and further bifurcating the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam made the announcement on Twitter. 

NIT issued shut down notice on August 2

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) had issued an indefinite shutdown order on August 2. The order was issued even though local administration had denied having issued any instructions to suspend its classes. According to reports, the notice issued by the institute had read, "This is for the information of all the students of the institute that the classwork for all courses stands suspended till further orders. The above notice stands issued in accordance with the instructions received from the District Administration Srinagar." The institute had shut down immediately the next day on August 3, when massive troop deployments were made to the Kashmir valley.

Students get access to the Internet

After the abrogation of Article 370, the entire Kashmir Valley was put under lockdown to avoid any violent conflicts. The internet access was cut off and schools were shut. However, the Kashmir Valley is now starting to normalize, stated reports. It was revealed by the Jammu and Kashmir Directorate of Information on Friday that around 8,000 students in Srinagar gained access to internet facility in the last three weeks. The Srinagar administration made internet facilities available at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) for students to register for various examinations like GATE, JEE Mains, CSIR NET and NEET.
