Addressing the nation on India's 73rd Independence Day on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made several important announcements from New Delhi's Red Fort. Subsequent to this, former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has stated that he agrees with some of these points.

Taking to Twitter, Chidambaram said that all Indians should embrace three things that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in his speech. These include PM Modi's concern for a few alarming issues like population growth and single-use plastics. Chidambaram also supported the Prime Minister's statement on wealth-creators.

Independence Day Speech: PM Modi Launches War Against Single-use Plastic, Sets October 2 Target For Citizens

Here's Chidambaram's tweet:

Expressing his concern over population growth, Prime Minister Modi had said:

"Population explosion is fatal for us and for our upcoming generation. Through self-inspiration, there is a small group that benefits his/her own family as well as the country as a whole. They stopped the population explosion, in one or two generations their family has gone to a different level altogether - they have acquired a good education, they got rid of diseases. We cannot leave a diseased society or an illiterate society. If our population is not healthy and not educated then neither the country is happy nor the family."

Independence Day Speech: PM Modi Says Wealth Creators Shouldn't Be Eyed With Suspicion, They Are India's Wealth

Talking about wealth creators, the Prime Minister added:

"Let us never see wealth creators with suspicion. Only when wealth is created, wealth will be distributed," he said. "Wealth creation is absolutely essential. Those who create wealth are India's wealth and we respect them."

He further spoke about plastic pollution and urged fellow countrymen to quit the use of the same:

"Can we free India from single-use plastic? The time for implementing such an idea has come. May teams be mobilised to work in this direction. Let a significant step be made on 2nd October."

He concluded his Independence Day address by chanting 'Vande Mataram' and reciting the National Anthem.
