The Swacch Bharat Mission was launched by PM Modi on October 2, 2014, in honour of Mahatma Gandhi to make people realise the absolute importance of cleanliness and sanitation. The Indian government built over 100 million toilets under this project providing around 98% of Indian villages with free toilets. In an official statement, the Gates Foundation commended the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and said that it can serve as a model for other countries where they could take inspiration from.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation honours world leaders and individuals annually for their efforts in achieving the universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as proposed by the United Nations. Prior to presenting the award to PM Modi a video was played featuring a voice-over by the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan. The voice-over also presented some detailed statistics to the people in the crowd. In the past, the award has been received by Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway and former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
