PM Modi meets energy sector CEOs in Houston, says meeting 'wonderful'

After concluding his meeting, PM Modi has said that he had a wonderful discussion with the leading energy sector CEOs and signed MoU with natural gas firm of US

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked-off his six-day United States (US) visit on September 22 by meeting with top energy sector CEOs at a roundtable meeting in Houston. After concluding his meeting, the Prime Minister has said that he had a wonderful discussion with the leading energy sector CEOs. Notably, India signed MoUs with Tellurian and Petronet LNG, the Prime Minister has said. Prime Minister Modi has also said that they discussed opportunities in the energy sector.

Earlier, as the Prime Minister arrived in Houston for his mega 'Howdy Modi' event, he took to Twitter and greeted saying 'Howdy Houston'. The Prime Minister also shared pictures with CEOs of various energy sector companies. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) also posted a couple of photographs of PM Modi's meeting with the CEOs of some of the top oil companies based in the US. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), after PM's meet, said that had a "fruitful" meeting with CEOs. The MEA statement also added that the meeting focussed on working together for energy security and expanding mutual investment opportunities between India and the United States.

MoUs signed

US natural gas company Tellurian Inc. and Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) of India have signed an MoU. As per the MoU Petronet and its affiliates intend to negotiate the purchase of up to five million tonnes per annum (5 mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Driftwood, concurrent with its equity investment, which remains subject to further due diligence and approval of its board of directors. Tellurian and Petronet will endeavour to finalise the transaction agreements by March 31, 2020. A statement from Tellurian said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in PM Modi's presence. The statement said: "Petronet, India's largest LNG importer, will be able to deliver clean, low-cost and reliable natural gas to India from Driftwood. Increasing natural gas use will enable India to fuel its impressive economic growth to achieve Prime Minister Modi's goal of a USD 5 trillion economy, while contributing to a cleaner environment. "It is an honour to sign the MoU with Petronet in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At Tellurian, we look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with Petronet in the Driftwood project," Tellurian's president and CEO Meg Gentle added.

PM Modi's US visit

Prime Minister Modi began his six-day long US visit on Sunday. During his visit, PM Modi will take part in a series of events, most important being the Howdy Modi event on September 22 and the address at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27. American President Donald Trump will accompany the Prime Minister in his Howdy Modi event and as many as 50,000 people will attend the grand event in Houston's NRG Stadium. The Prime Minister on Monday will attend a Climate Action summit, highlighting India's commitment to fight climate change menace. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to attend a special event celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India has also gifted a Solar Park named 'Gandhi Solar Park' to the UN Headquarters.
