PM Modi meets New Jersey governor, discusses trade and other ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met New Jersey Governor Phillip D Murphy and discussed cooperation in areas including trade and investment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met New Jersey Governor Phillip D Murphy. PM Modi discussed cooperation in areas including trade and investment. Murphy is visiting Agra, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad apart from Delhi. According to an official statement, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Murphy's desire to promote closer commercial and people-to-people relations between New Jersey and India.

PM Modi assured Murphy of the Indian government's support as New Jersey seeks to pursue meaningful cooperation with Indian states. Murphy also briefed PM Modi of his priorities for building his state's relations with India. In addition, he committed to working towards a robust partnership between India and the US, the statement said. Noting the commonalities between India and New Jersey, Murphy mentioned the celebration of diversity and respect for plurality in India which he has witnessed since arriving in India. Prime Minister Modi noted that the State of New Jersey, which hosts the highest concentration of the Indian-American population in the US, has emerged as a top destination for India's trade and investment into the US. Both leaders agreed to the significance of cooperation in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and higher education, it said.

Meanwhile, the Texas India Forum (TIF) is organizing a mega-event for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston on September 22. Over a thousand volunteers have come forward to organize this community event for PM Modi. TIF has also confirmed that over 650 community organizations have already signed up to be 'welcome partners' for the program. Apart from this, 50000 people have already registered as attendees for one of PM Modi's largest community events. In addition, United States President Donald Trump will also join PM Modi.

Both leaders will jointly address the attendees. The event is said to be sold-out with the whopping numbers of expected attendees.  The word 'Howdy' is a short form from  'How do you do?' which is a friendly greeting commonly used in the southwestern United States and therefore is the name of the event designed as a greeting to PM Modi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously addressed similar gatherings at Madison Square Garden in New York and the SAP Center in San Jose. The US Press Secretary in a statement announced that US President Donald Trump will be traveling to Houston, Texas, and Wapakoneta, Ohio to accentuate the important partnerships between the United States, India, and Australia. The US statement confirmed that Donald Trump would be participating in the "Howdy, Modi!" event alongside PM Modi.
