PM Modi has written letters to village chiefs asking them to save rainwater as water crisis hits rural areas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written letters to all the 'Gram Pradhans' or village chiefs requesting them to conserve rainwater during the upcoming monsoon.

The PM wrote these letters since the rural areas in Uttar Pradesh have been battling water crisis. The signed letters were hand-delivered through the respective District Magistrates and Collectors in all the districts. The letters have become a topic of discussion among the villagers. In Eastern UP's Sonbhadra, around 637 village chiefs have received the letters in which the Prime Minister has urged them to personally encourage the villagers to save rainwater.

These letters which are written in Hindi by the Prime Minister's say:

"Dear Sarpanchji, Namaskar (Namaste). I hope that you and all my brothers and sisters of the panchayat would be in the best of health. The rainy season is about to begin. We are grateful to God that we are blessed with so much rainwater. We should make all efforts and arrangement to conserve this blessing."

An appeal has also been made to the village heads in the page-long letters to conduct a gram sabha meeting or the village assembly, where the PM has asked for his message to be read out loud:

"It is requested that a discussion should be held in the village on how to conserve water. I have faith in all of you that adequate arrangements would be made to save every drop of rainwater," the letter added.

Apart from the crucial message for saving rainwater, the Prime Minister has suggested steps for proper harvesting of rainwater like the construction of dams and ponds. Umesh Mishra, the District Magistrate (DM) of Amroha, Uttar Pradesh has ensured that the PM's letter reached all village heads. Mishra's plans are already in place, which include digging 775 ponds in rural areas and work on another 500 is already in motion.
