Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be attending a three-day training program of party leaders which will begin in Raebareli from Tuesday. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Vadra, the party general secretary (in-charge, Uttar Pradesh East), in Delhi. The newly elected members of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee were part of this gathering.
Senior Congress leaders from the State such as Pramod Tiwari, Raashid Alvi, and UP PCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu were also present in the meeting. Surprisingly, senior Congressman Salman Khurshid was absent from the meeting which went on for almost four hours.
Sources say the training program being organised is aimed at strengthening the Congress UP unit at a time when the party is still recovering from the bitter defeat it tasted in this year's Lok Sabha elections. Ajay Kumar Lallu had assumed the role of state unit's President in early October and had expressed the resolve of making Congress win in the assembly elections scheduled for 2022.
Describing Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the "second Indira Gandhi" and a "storm of change", Lallu on Sunday had exuded confidence that the party will emerge victorious under her leadership in the 2022 State assembly polls. A two-time MLA from Tamkuhi Raj constituency, Lallu is considered close to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Prior to becoming the UP Congress chief, he was the Congress Legislature Party leader in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
"Priyanka Gandhi is the second Indira Gandhi. She is the storm of change (badlaav ki yeh aandhi, jiskaa naam Priyanka Gandhi hai). Under her leadership, the Congress will emerge victorious in the 2022 UP Assembly elections," he said. "This BJP Government (headed by CM Yogi Adityanath) fears both Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as it knows that if the brother-sister hit the streets, it will start sweating," Lallu told PTI in an interview.
